SAN FRANCISCO, United States — Asian champions Qatar rescued a dramatic point in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring deep into stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Group B.
The result leaves all four teams in the group level on points after Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina also played out a 1-1 draw in their opening fixture. Qatar looked set to begin their campaign with defeat before defender Boualem Khoukhi rose highest in added time to head home a crucial equaliser.
Okay News reports, Switzerland appeared on course for all three points after taking the lead earlier in the contest and maintaining control for much of the second half. The Europeans created several opportunities to extend their advantage, with Breel Embolo, Rubén Vargas and Johan Manzambi all going close as Qatar struggled to break through.
Qatar, however, continued to push for a way back into the match and nearly found an equaliser when Ahmed Alaa forced Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel into a crucial save late in the game. Their persistence eventually paid off in stoppage time when Homam El Amin delivered a cross into the penalty area and Khoukhi powered a header into the bottom corner to spark celebrations among the Qatari players and supporters.
The draw represents an important result for Qatar as they seek to progress beyond the group stage after their disappointing campaign as hosts at the 2022 World Cup. Switzerland, meanwhile, will be left frustrated after letting victory slip in the closing moments despite creating the better chances throughout the encounter.
With Group B now finely balanced, Qatar and Switzerland will turn their attention to their next fixtures knowing that the battle for qualification remains wide open.
