MAIDUGURI, Borno – Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, representing Borno Central Senatorial District, has approved the release of ₦135,650,000 as a Sallah support package for All Progressives Congress (APC) executives across eight local government areas ahead of the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
Okay News reports that the cash disbursement, which the lawmaker’s camp described as the third of its kind, is intended to cushion the financial demands of the festive season for party officials and reward their grassroots loyalty. The target beneficiaries span the entire senatorial district, where party stakeholders have widely praised the intervention as a timely welfare boost for local families.
“The gesture, which is the third of its kind, is aimed at supporting party officials and appreciating their unwavering commitment, loyalty, and contributions toward strengthening the APC,” Lawan stated in an official release, emphasizing his ongoing commitment to the welfare of his constituents while urging continued internal unity within the ruling party.
However, the announcement has sparked intense criticism across social media platforms, with citizens condemning the multi-million naira cash package during a period of widespread economic hardship. Critics have expressed outrage over the public display of political patronage, questioning the source of the funds and the decision to prioritize partisan executives over the general, vulnerable population of Borno State.
The controversy is further compounded by Lawan’s professional background as a senior lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Commentators online have pointed out that a lawmaker of his legal standing should be mindful of cash transaction thresholds and the potential scrutiny such massive liquidity distribution could attract from anti-graft agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
