RUSSIA — Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to China on May 19, 2026, for a two-day visit.
The Kremlin announced the scheduled trip on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The statement noted that the visit follows the conclusion of a trip to Beijing by United States President Donald Trump.
Okay News reports that Vladimir Putin will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss the further strengthening of the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Moscow and Beijing. The two leaders are expected to exchange views on key international and regional issues and sign a joint declaration at the conclusion of their talks.
As part of the itinerary, Vladimir Putin is scheduled to discuss economic and trade cooperation with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. The announcement comes after Donald Trump completed the first visit to China by a United States president in nearly a decade on Friday, May 15, 2026.
During his stay, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping discussed the conflict in Ukraine, which has lasted more than four years, and the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Donald Trump departed China on Friday without appearing to secure a breakthrough on either matter.
China has called for talks to end the fighting in Ukraine but has not condemned Russia for sending troops into the country in February 2022. Beijing has denied providing Moscow with weapons and military components, instead stating that Western countries prolong the conflict by arming Ukraine.
China is currently the top buyer of Russian fossil fuels and has become the primary economic partner for Moscow since Western countries imposed sanctions on Russian oil and gas. Negotiations to end the fighting in Ukraine have appeared stalled since the outbreak of the United States and Israeli war with Iran on February 28, 2026.
Moscow has ruled out a ceasefire or comprehensive negotiations with Ukraine unless Kyiv cedes to the demands of the Kremlin.
