General Yakubu Gowon was Nigeria’s third military Head of State, and he was in power from August 1, 1966 to July 29, 1975.
In 1969, precisely on April 19, Gowon married Victoria Zakari, in Lagos. Because the civil war was still going on that year, many considered it distasteful that the General chose that time to wed.
Several decades later, we can finally have a glimpse of what the then Head of State’s wedding invitation looked like, thanks to @SeeMeSeeNigeria.
We also found some of the wedding pictures, and indeed, the couple looked really lovely on their big day. There was even a four-tier wedding cake, which was rather ‘elaborate’ by the standards of those days.
The retired general and his beautiful wife are still married, and April 19, 2015, would be their 46th wedding anniversary.
