Lagos, Nigeria – Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele publicly mourned the passing of Nigerian actor Alexx Ekubo following the confirmation of his death at age 40 on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
Okay News reports that Akindele published a statement on Instagram regarding her previous attempts to contact her colleague before his death.
“I really tried to reach out to see you one more time but guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace Alex,” Akindele said. “Ore mi, like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in peace Alex.”
Nigerian actor Bolanle Ninalowo responded to the news from the United States. “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all,” Ninalowo said.
The death was confirmed by Akindele, Ninalowo, and Nigerian actor Godwin Nnadiekwe. Ekubo had been absent from his social media accounts since December 30, 2024, before a recent video uploaded by X user @AsakyGRN showed him interacting with children.
Prior to Ekubo’s death, Nigerian actor Ikechukwu Ogbonna addressed the social media absence. “Alex is very okay. He is in good health, and there is nothing wrong with him. He is just taking a leave because sometimes people want to take time off social media and social gatherings,” Ogbonna said.
