Court Refuses Abba Kyari Bail in Cocaine Deal

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

The Federal High Court in Abuja has refused to grant bail to suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, and two other senior police officers. The court held that the defendants failed to provide evidence to warrant bail.

Kyari was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in February 2022 for alleged involvement in a cocaine deal. He was arraigned on March 7, 2022, along with four other suspended officers and two suspected drug traffickers.

The court had previously denied bail to the defendants and ordered their detention in Kuje prison. The defendants are facing charges of dealing 17.55 kilograms of cocaine, in violation of the NDLEA Act.

In separate rulings, Justice Emeka Nwite declined to grant bail to the defendants, stating that the court must exercise its discretion judiciously and cannot grant bail in this case.
