Celebrated South African DJ and music producer, DBN Gogo, continues to make waves in the music industry, now being appointed as the EQUAL Africa Ambassador for March by Spotify.

This prestigious recognition comes as DBN Gogo, originally highlighted as one of mint’s Artists To Watch for 2024, further solidifies her position as a rising star in the African music scene.

DBN Gogo joins a select group of artists chosen as EQUAL Africa Ambassadors, demonstrating Spotify’s commitment to supporting women artists across the continent. She is the only artist in Africa to hold the ambassadorship twice, showcasing her remarkable talent and impact.

Spotify’s EQUAL initiative has been instrumental in promoting gender equality in the music industry, with over 6,900 women artists featured on EQUAL playlists and more than 1,000 ambassadors supported in their home countries. The platform has generated over 31 billion editorial streams across 1 billion listening hours, with EQUAL artists receiving 1.3 billion editorial streams within their first month of joining the program.

Monica Kemoli-Savanne, Spotify’s Artist & Label Partnerships Manager for East Africa, emphasized the importance of uplifting women artists, stating, “How we show up on the continent for women and how we tell their stories is a priority for us, and artists such as DBN Gogo are presenting positive narratives locally and to the world through EQUAL Africa.”

Reflecting on her experience as an EQUAL Africa Ambassador, DBN Gogo expressed gratitude for the recognition and the opportunity to represent women in South African music.

She said: “Being a part of the EQUAL Africa program is something I am truly grateful for. Being recognized and celebrated as one of the many women pioneering in SA music is an honour. The industry being male-dominated just exists as a fact in my world, not a barrier to entry. I have set my own standard.”
