Diaspora Group Defends Goodluck Jonathan Against Criticisms

LAGOS, NigeriaThe Goodluckans 2027 Diaspora Leadership Council condemned remarks made by social media commentator VeryDarkMan against former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in a statement released on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

Okay News reports that council coordinator Eliana Melekwe signed the document stating that members of the organization were disturbed by the comments and insisted that his service to the nation should not be trivialized.

“Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan remains one of the finest democratic leaders Nigeria has ever produced,” the council said.

The group identified itself as a coalition of citizens living abroad, including medical professionals, legal practitioners, academics, and business owners. The organization stated its movement is driven by patriotism rather than online popularity or personal financial interests.

The council referenced the former president’s conduct during the 2015 election. “my political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,” the group quoted him as saying.

“At a delicate period in the nation’s political history, President Jonathan chose peace, unity and democratic continuity over personal ambition,” the council said.

The group urged public personalities and online influencers to exercise restraint and accuracy when making comments about individuals who have served the nation. “Public influence carries enormous responsibility and must be exercised with fairness, honesty and respect for historical truth, particularly when discussing leaders whose sacrifices and contributions to democratic governance are well established,” the statement said.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to the promotion of democracy, accountability, peaceful coexistence, and national unity in Nigeria.
