ADO-EKITI, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, ordered the suspension of night vigil programs in churches across the Eda Oniyo community in the Ilejemeje Local Government Area on Sunday, May 3, 2026, following an attack that resulted in the death of a pastor and the abduction of approximately 15 worshippers.
Okay News reports that Oyebanji announced the directive during a sympathy visit to the community. Represented by his deputy, Chief Monisade Afuye, the governor stated the temporary suspension forms part of immediate security measures aimed at curbing further attacks.
Oyebanji urged residents to hold religious activities during the daytime until the situation stabilizes. “This government will not abandon you. We will do everything possible to rescue those abducted and strengthen security in this area,” he said.
The governor outlined plans to address cross-border criminal activities, stating that the community’s proximity to neighboring states makes it vulnerable to infiltration through forest routes and porous borders. He called on residents to cooperate with authorities and warned against internal collaboration with criminal elements.
The Eleda of Eda Oniyo, Julius Awolola, appealed for a stronger security presence in the area. The Chairman of the Eda Oniyo Progressive Union, Rufus Ajayi, disclosed that the community initiated the construction of a police station near the Eda Oniyo to Obbo Ayegunle border.
Ajayi appealed to the state government to support the completion of the police station project and facilitate the establishment of a military post to reinforce security.
