El-Rufai’s Son Raises Concern Over Father’s Detention in Democracy Day Message

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

KADUNA, Nigeria – Member of the House of Representatives representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, has alleged that his father, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, is being unlawfully detained, describing the situation as evidence that Nigeria’s democratic journey remains unfinished.

In a Democracy Day message released on Friday, Bello El-Rufai said the continued detention of his father, alongside the experiences of other Nigerians who have allegedly suffered similar violations, highlights ongoing concerns about the protection of citizens’ rights and adherence to the rule of law.

Okay News reports that the lawmaker made the remarks while reflecting on the state of Nigeria’s democracy and the importance of safeguarding fundamental freedoms.

According to him, democracy can only thrive when leaders are held accountable, citizens are empowered, and institutions uphold justice and due process. He argued that the true measure of democratic governance extends beyond elections and includes respect for individual rights and the protection of civil liberties.

The chairman of the House Committee on Banking Regulations called on Nigerians to use the Democracy Day commemoration as an opportunity to recommit to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting justice, and ensuring that the rights of all citizens are respected and protected.
