Family Demands Answers After Covenant University Student Death

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Sango Ota, NIGERIA – The family of Jesutunmise Emmanuel, a 500-level student at Covenant University who died during a football training session, has called for a transparent investigation into the tragedy, citing “material inconsistencies” in the school’s account.

Okay News gathered that the family issued a statement on Thursday, April 9, 2026, challenging the version of events provided by the university management. While the university claimed the student was brought to the medical center “dead on arrival” due to a suspected underlying condition, the family pointed to eyewitness reports that suggest lapses in the emergency response.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, April 6, 2026, sparked significant social media backlash. Students and observers on X alleged that the university’s medical clinic lacked essential oxygen and that personnel attempted to pray for the student rather than administering urgent medical care.
“Certain conclusions appear to have been reached and communicated publicly before a full and independently verified review,” the family’s statement read.

They are now seeking clarity on the exact timeline of events, the student’s condition during the initial intervention, and the adequacy of the medical response. The family confirmed they are seeking an independent assessment of medical records and eyewitness accounts to ensure accountability for the loss of their son.
