Gospel Star Sinach Faces ₦5 Billion Copyright Lawsuit Over Hit Song ‘Way Maker’

By Damilola A.

Popular gospel artiste Sinach has been sued by music producer Michael Oluwole, professionally known as Maye, over alleged copyright infringement related to her 2016 hit song ‘Way Maker.’

In a suit numbered FHC/L/CS/402/2024, Maye is seeking a declaration from the Federal High Court in Lagos that he is an author and co-owner of the globally acclaimed song.

Maye claims co-ownership of the song, citing his contributions to its production. However, Sinach, who is recognized as one of Nigeria’s foremost gospel musicians, has denied the allegations.

She insists on her sole authorship of ‘Way Maker’, which she says contributed significantly to her global recognition as a gospel artist.

The trial commenced on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, but has been adjourned until January 29 and 30, 2025, for further proceedings.

‘Way Maker’, released in 2016, is one of Sinach’s most successful tracks, garnering international acclaim and widespread use in Christian worship settings worldwide.
