The Edo State Police Command has arraigned a 72-year-old man, Mr. Solomon Ugiagbe, before an Egor Magistrate’s Court, Benin, for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl.
Ugiagbe was arraigned on one count.
It was learnt that the accused person, said to be a grandfather, committed the offence on November 13, 2014.
The matter was reported at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
The offence, according to the police prosecutor, contravened Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48, Vol. II, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976, as applicable in Edo State.
The charge read, “That you, Solomon Ugiagbe, on November 13, 2014, on Okungbowa Street, Evbuotubu, Benin City, in the Egor Magisterial District, did unlawfully have carnal knowledge of one (name withheld) aged 11 years by inserting your penis into her vaginal and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48 Vol. II, Law of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976, as applicable in Edo State.”
The accused person pleaded not guilty.
The presiding magistrate, William Aziegbemhin, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 and adjourned the case till October 5, 2015.
