Jos, NIGERIA – Islamic cleric has condemned the abductors of a University of Jos graduate, invoking strong prayers against those behind the crime and warning that Nigeria’s growing kidnapping crisis is spiraling out of control.

The cleric reacted after a viral video showed the victim, identified as John Arum, in captivity, with his abductors demanding a ransom of ₦30 million (about $20,000). The disturbing footage has triggered widespread concern and renewed calls for urgent government action.

Okay News reports that Gumi described the situation as a reflection of deeper systemic failure, blaming both leadership gaps and ineffective security strategies for the rise in abductions across the country. He warned that the threat is no longer isolated, stressing that “anybody can be a victim” if urgent steps are not taken.

In his reaction, Gumi condemned the perpetrators in strong terms, saying they had lost all sense of humanity. He also directed criticism at individuals and institutions he believes contributed to the crisis, either through action, inaction, or negligence, declaring that such roles have worsened insecurity nationwide.

Beyond condemnation, the cleric argued that Nigeria’s heavy reliance on military force has not delivered the desired results. He called for a broader and more strategic approach that includes non-violent methods such as dialogue, mediation, and ideological reorientation, suggesting that force alone may be fueling the cycle of violence.

Gumi also warned against emotional reactions and conspiracy-driven narratives, urging both authorities and the public to focus on practical, evidence-based solutions. According to him, excessive force can harden criminal groups rather than weaken them, making long-term peace more difficult to achieve.

He further criticised what he described as the slow response of government institutions, noting that delays and gaps in action have allowed criminal networks to expand and operate with increasing boldness. This, he said, has created a dangerous environment where armed groups can instill fear and exert influence over communities.

The cleric’s position on engaging with armed groups has remained controversial. While critics argue that such engagement risks legitimising criminals, supporters believe it has helped secure the release of victims in situations where conventional security efforts have failed.

Meanwhile, the abduction has drawn strong reactions from student bodies, with the National Association of Nigerian Students issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to authorities to secure the victim’s release. The group warned that failure to act within the timeframe could lead to nationwide protests, increasing pressure on the government to respond swiftly.

As the situation develops, the case has become another stark reminder of Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges and the urgent need for effective, coordinated solutions.
