PLATEAU, NIGERIA: Armed assailants killed eight people and injured more than 10 others during a birthday celebration in Gwon-Ajang village in Plateau State at approximately 10 p.m. WAT on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
Okay News reports that the Berom Youths Moulder-Association confirmed the attack in a statement.
The association’s national publicity secretary, Rwang Tengwong, said armed terrorists carried out the assault and that the injured victims were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
The attackers invaded the community in the Foron District of Nigeria’s Barkin Ladi Local Government Area and fired indiscriminately at residents attending the social event.
Bishop Iliya, a resident of the community, said the victims were gathered for a member’s birthday when the shooting began.
“The people were gathered for a birthday celebration when the gunmen arrived and started shooting at everything in sight. It is a painful and unfortunate situation for our community,” Iliya said.
The injured residents were evacuated to nearby health facilities, and security personnel were deployed to the area following the violence.
Efforts to reach SP Alfred Alabo, spokesman for Nigeria’s Plateau Police Command, for a comment on the incident were unsuccessful.
