IGP Orders Protection for Protesters, Meets with Organizer

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed top police officials to ensure the safety of participants in the planned #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled for August 1-10, 2024. The protest aims to address economic hardship, food inflation, and forex issues.

The IGP’s directive was in response to a request by human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, who sought police protection for protesters. Adegboruwa, representing the Take It Back Movement, had written to the IGP on July 26, 2024.

The police chief has also invited Adegboruwa for a meeting on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, to discuss the protest further. This development comes amid warnings from the police, military, and Department of State Service against the protest, which has gained traction on social media.

Despite appeals from politicians to shelve the protest, organizers remain resolute, citing the need for action against economic hardship and inflation. The protest is planned to take place across all states and the nation’s capital.
