DUTSE, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to working more closely with traditional rulers to promote security, peace, national unity and sustainable development across the country.
Speaking through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, at the 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council in Dutse, Jigawa State, the President said traditional institutions remain critical partners in governance because of their influence at the grassroots level.
Okay News reports that Tinubu commended the council, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, for its role in fostering peace, unity and development across Northern Nigeria. Addressing the meeting themed “Peace, Unity and Development of the North,” the President stressed that lasting progress cannot be achieved without peace and social cohesion.
The minister said the government has continued to intensify security operations through improved coordination among the military, intelligence agencies and other security institutions, while also tackling the underlying causes of insecurity such as poverty, unemployment and social exclusion.
He highlighted several economic and development initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including investments in agriculture, infrastructure, education financing, consumer credit and support for small businesses. Idris also described the newly created Federal Ministry of Livestock Development as a strategic step aimed at modernising the livestock sector, boosting food security and reducing farmer-herder conflicts.
The minister further cited ongoing legacy infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, Calabar-Abuja Super Highway and the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Road Corridor, saying they would improve connectivity, stimulate economic growth and strengthen national integration.
He urged traditional rulers to continue supporting government efforts by promoting public awareness, encouraging responsible citizenship and helping to counter misinformation. The minister also expressed condolences over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, describing it as a painful reminder of the need to sustain the fight against insecurity.
