Washington, D.C., UNITED STATES — President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Monday, April 20, 2026, to clarify the motivations behind the ongoing conflict with Iran, asserting that the decision was based on his long-standing policy rather than pressure from Israel.

In a late-afternoon post, Trump dismissed reports from what he termed “FAKE NEWS Pundits,” who suggested that Israeli influence drove the United States into the current war.

Okay News reports that the President cited the events of October 7, 2023, and his lifelong conviction that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon as the primary catalysts for the military campaign.

The President also took aim at current polling and media coverage, claiming that 90% of mainstream reporting consists of “lies and made-up stories.” He drew parallels between domestic polling and the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election, which he reiterated was “rigged,” while also referencing recent contested election results in Venezuela.

Notably, Trump explicitly called for regime change in Tehran, predicting that the eventual results in Iran would be “amazing.” He suggested that under “new leaders,” the country could achieve a prosperous future, provided they are “smart” enough to accept the “deal” currently being proposed by the U.S. administration.

The statement comes at a high-stakes moment in the conflict. While a two-week ceasefire is currently in place, it is set to expire this Wednesday, April 22. U.S. negotiators are currently in Islamabad, Pakistan, for critical talks aimed at averting a full-scale escalation, even as U.S. naval forces continue to enforce a strict blockade in the Gulf of Oman.

White House officials have not provided further details on the specific “Regime Change” comments, but the President’s rhetoric signals a hardening stance as the deadline for the ceasefire approaches.
