Jehovah’s Witness Cancer Patient ‘Aunty Esther’ Dies After Transfusion Debate

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Mensah Omolola, popularly known on social media as Aunty Esther, has died after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.

News of her death emerged late Saturday, triggering an outpouring of tributes from Nigerians who closely followed her health journey online.

Okay News had reported how Aunty Esther’s case drew national attention earlier this month after a massive public fundraising campaign raised over ₦30 million to support her treatment.

Controversy followed when she declined a blood transfusion recommended by doctors, citing her beliefs as a Jehovah’s Witness, and instead chose a longer, more expensive treatment route that avoided transfusion.

The decision sparked intense public debate around faith, medical ethics, and public donations, with supporters and critics clashing online.

Despite the backlash, those managing her care consistently maintained that all funds were used strictly for her treatment until her passing.
