Chelsea have announced that captain John Terry has been offered a new one-year contract extension.

The 35-year-old, who is considering the offer, told reporters earlier this year he would not be handed another Blues deal with his current contract set to expire in the summer.

The club’s stance has proved unpopular among Chelsea supporters, who staged a protest in the 26th minute of Chelsea’s trip to Anfield last weekend.

Fans had also planned a walkout during the visit of Champions Leicester on the final day of the season, but the club have now responded by offering Terry a further 12 months at Stamford Bridge.

A message on the club’s Twitter feed said: “It is announced in the press conference that John Terry has been offered a one-year contract extension. John is considering the offer.”

Terry has made over 700 appearances for Chelsea, winning 14 major honours including four Premier League titles and one Champions League crown.

Following the announcement, outgoing manager Guus Hiddink added: “Of course every now and then I talk to the people inside for now and for the future I must see.

“Generally speaking players, ex players, I’m not talking about John now, are having a lot of influence in the culture of a club.

“It’s good to have big players in the club who are big personalities. Maybe in the future that’s also for John.

“He is already 20, 21 years at the club; recently I saw an image of him coming in as a youngster. It’s huge. You must cherish those legends.”
