Mourinho in Final Talks for Return as Real Madrid Manager

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

MADRID, Spain – Jose Mourinho is on the verge of a dramatic return to the Santiago Bernabéu, with negotiations to become Real Madrid’s next head coach reaching their final stages.

Okay News reports that the 63-year-old Portuguese tactician, currently managing Benfica, has emerged as the sole candidate to replace Alvaro Arbeloa. The move comes 13 years after Mourinho’s first stint in the Spanish capital, where he famously broke Barcelona’s dominance by winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup between 2010 and 2013.

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez reportedly turned to Mourinho just days after Xabi Alonso’s departure in January, seeking a “strongman” to restore order to a fractured dressing room. The 2025-26 season has been disastrous for Los Blancos, ending trophyless after a 14-point deficit to champions Barcelona and a quarter-final exit from the Champions League. Internal turmoil has further plagued the club, highlighted by a massive 1 million euro fine levied against Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni following a physical altercation.

The appointment is expected to move quickly following Benfica’s final match of the season against Estoril Praia on Saturday. A strategic clause in Mourinho’s current contract allows him to leave the Portuguese club for a relatively modest fee of 3 million euros, provided the deal is finalized within 10 days of the season’s end. Analysts suggest Perez views Mourinho as the “ultimate wildcard” capable of managing high-profile egos and rebuilding a collective fighting spirit at a club currently under fire from its own supporters.

With Kylian Mbappé facing unprecedented scrutiny and a petition for his exit reportedly garnering 73 million signatures, Mourinho’s primary task will be to restore authority and tactical discipline. The “Special One” arrives with a wealth of experience from subsequent spells at Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma, and Fenerbahce, carrying the immense expectation of ending Real Madrid’s rare two-year trophy drought.
