Muhammadu Sanusi II Reinstated as Emir of Kano

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, four years after his deposition.

The governor announced the decision after signing the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law, which dissolves the emirate councils created in 2019.

Sanusi’s reinstatement comes after a long-standing dispute with the previous administration, which led to his removal in March 2020.

The new law reverses the creation of additional emirates and restores the original Kano Emirate to its pre-2019 status.

The governor gave the emirs of the dissolved emirates 48 hours to vacate their palaces. Sanusi’s reinstatement has been met with excitement and support from his followers, who view him as a victim of political persecution.

This development marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, with the new administration reversing controversial policies of the previous government. Sanusi’s return to the throne is seen as a victory for those who opposed his removal and a testament to the power of political will.
