ABUJA, Nigeria — The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has received a donation of specialized communication equipment from SpaceX Starlink to enhance emergency response and disaster management operations across Nigeria.
Okay News reports that the equipment was formally presented following a meeting involving Vice President Kashim Shettima and representatives of the satellite internet provider. The SpaceX Starlink delegation was led by Peter Kroetger.
Shettima welcomed the partnership between NEMA and Starlink, describing it as a significant boost to the country’s disaster response capabilities. He assured the company that the donated technology would be deployed effectively to improve emergency coordination and communication.
The donation includes 91 standard and mini communication units designed to provide reliable connectivity in remote and underserved locations where conventional communication infrastructure is often unavailable during emergencies.
NEMA said the equipment will help address longstanding communication challenges encountered during disaster response operations, particularly in hard-to-reach communities affected by floods, conflicts and other emergencies.
According to the agency, the devices will be deployed to 50 strategic flashpoints nationwide, while its command-and-control centre will also be upgraded to strengthen coordination, monitoring and rapid response efforts.
The development is expected to improve real-time communication between emergency responders and affected communities, enhancing NEMA’s ability to deliver timely interventions during disasters across the country.
