ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has called for deeper cooperation with Israel across key sectors including agriculture, security, education, healthcare and technology, as part of efforts to support Nigeria’s economic growth and national development.
Okay News reports that the call was made by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume during a meeting with Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria Michael Freeman in Abuja on Tuesday.
Akume said Nigeria possesses significant advantages, including vast arable land, a large population and abundant natural resources. He noted that stronger international partnerships and investments could help the country expand food production, improve healthcare services, strengthen education and accelerate technological advancement.
The SGF also praised Israel’s achievements in agriculture, healthcare, education and innovation despite the country’s environmental challenges. Drawing from his previous visits to Israel, he described the nation as an example of resilience and strategic development.
Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Freeman said Israel is prepared to work with Nigeria to boost agricultural productivity through advanced irrigation systems and modern farming techniques. He expressed confidence that Nigeria could become a major exporter of agricultural products with sustained commitment and effective implementation of development policies.
The ambassador also highlighted areas for potential security cooperation, including counterterrorism, cybersecurity, border security, intelligence gathering and the tracking of illicit financial flows. He noted that both countries face similar security threats and could benefit from closer collaboration.
Also speaking, Presidential Adviser on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka Famadewa (Rtd.), emphasized the importance of intelligence sharing, specialized training and capacity building between the two nations. He said Israel’s technological expertise and security systems could support Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its security architecture and respond more effectively to emerging threats.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, as discussions focused on expanding cooperation in sectors considered critical to Nigeria’s long-term development goals.
