Nigerian Police Chief Visits Oyo State After Student Abductions

IBADAN, NigeriaNigeria‘s Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu visited Oyo State over the weekend following a terrorist attack and abduction in Oriire Local Government Area on Friday, May 15, 2026.

Okay News reports that Disu met with the Commissioner of Police for the Oyo State Police Command, Abimbola Olugbenga, and other security stakeholders to receive operational briefings on rescue efforts and deployments across the affected communities.

Disu stated that the Nigeria Police Force has intensified coordinated search-and-rescue operations, intelligence gathering, and tactical deployments. He said: “The Nigeria Police Force remains fully committed to the protection of schools, communities, and all citizens across the country.”

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria condemned the abduction of 87 students and teachers in Borno State and Oyo State within 24 hours. The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, called for strategic measures to make schools safe nationwide and address the out-of-school children crisis.

Bamidele said: “As soon as the National Assembly resumes plenaries on June 2, we will perfect all outstanding legislative initiatives that have been introduced to decisively address security challenges in the federation”.

The Commandant of the Oyo State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, Colonel Olayanju Olayinka, disclosed that operatives, local hunters, and vigilantes have launched coordinated search operations. He said: “Our personnel are already combing the forests and suspected hideouts. We are working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the safe rescue of the victims.”

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Oyo State, Prince Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the government is collaborating with security agencies to secure the release of the abducted children. Oyelade said: “The state government is deeply concerned about the incident, and every possible step is being taken to ensure the children are rescued safely.”

The Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Deputy Superintendent of Police Olayinka Ayanlade, noted that tactical and intelligence teams were deployed to the affected communities immediately after the incident. Ayanlade said: “The police command has mobilised all necessary resources to rescue the abducted pupils and arrest the criminals behind the incident.”
