Nigerian Renowned Poet Ikeogu Oke Dies Aged 51

Nigerian renowned poet and winner of the 2017 NLNG-sponsored Nigerian Prize for literature, Ikeogu Oke, is dead.

The award-winning Nigerian poet died at the National Hospital in Abuja after a protracted illness at aged 51.

Oke’s poem, The Heresiad, was declared the winner of the coveted prize from among 184 entries received from across the nation.

The deceased, who is graduated with a BA in English and literary studies from the University of Calabar and an MA in literature from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, performed his poems at various fora in Nigeria, South Africa and the United States.

On September 16, the award-winning Nigerian poet took to his Facebook page to write his epitaph.

The post read: “My Epitaph. Here lies a man who loved virtue and art, And gave to both his fortunes and his heart. Ikeogu Oke (1967 – ).”
