Nigerian Senate Suspends Recess for Emergency Plenary

Abuja, Nigeria – The Senate has suspended its ongoing legislative recess and summoned lawmakers to an emergency plenary session on June 23, 2026, to address national security matters.

The Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, issued a notice dated June 15, 2026, directing senators to reconvene at the National Assembly Complex at 11:00 a.m. WAT. Okay News reports that the recall was authorized by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

“The purpose of this emergency sitting is to enable the Senate consider matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention,” the notice read.

The National Assembly previously adjourned plenary last week to observe the Democracy Day holiday. Lawmakers were originally scheduled to resume legislative activities on July 7, 2026.

The recall follows statements by the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, who said that more than 13,000 terrorists were neutralized within the past year. He added that terror-related deaths dropped by 81 per cent since 2015, while acknowledging ongoing hostage situations involving schoolchildren in Oyo State and Borno State.

Prior to the recess, the Senate and the House of Representatives advanced proposals to amend Sections 197, 214, and 215 of the 1999 Constitution. The legislation, which has passed a second reading in the Senate, transfers policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List to permit the creation of state police forces.
