Nigeria is set to transition to a new national tax identification framework as the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) and the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) formally announced the launch of the Nigerian Tax ID Portal, a unified digital platform designed to modernise tax administration across the country.

Okay News reports that the new system, which becomes effective January 1, 2026, will replace all previously issued Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) with a single, system-generated Tax Identification (Tax ID) applicable nationwide.

According to the official notice contained in the document released by the revenue authorities, the initiative is part of broader reforms aimed at simplifying tax compliance and improving efficiency.

The document states: “As part of ongoing efforts to modernize and streamline tax administration in Nigeria, the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) and the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) are pleased to announce the launch of the Nigerian Tax ID Portal.”

The Tax ID is described as “a unique, system-generated number assigned to all taxable persons in Nigeria for the purpose of tax administration.”

For individuals, the number will be linked directly to the National Identification Number (NIN), while businesses and organisations will have their Tax ID tied to their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number.

In a move likely to ease public anxiety, the authorities clearly stated that the new identifier is not a tool for punitive financial action. The document explicitly reassures taxpayers that “the introduction of the Tax ID will not lead to bank account deductions or closures due to non-compliance.”

The circular further clarifies that the Tax ID is “strictly for tax administration,” adding that its introduction will deliver key benefits such as “unified identification for all taxpayers,” “simplified access to tax-related services,” and “nationwide accessibility and ease of use.”

Under the new arrangement, Nigerians will be able to retrieve their Tax ID online via www.taxid.jrb.gov.ng or www.taxid.nrs.gov.ng.

Individuals are required to input their NIN alongside personal details as captured by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), after which a 13-digit Tax ID will be generated. Registered entities will follow a similar process using their CAC registration numbers.

The revenue authorities confirmed that “the use of the new Tax ID becomes effective from January 1, 2026, replacing previously issued TINs.”

The portal will be accessible nationwide from the effective date, and taxpayers who require further assistance are advised to visit the platform or contact the nearest tax office.
