ABUJA, Nigeria — The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has hosted the 15 exceptional Nigerian university students who emerged as global champions at the 10th Huawei Global ICT Competition finals in Shenzhen, China.
The reception took place on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at the ministry’s headquarters to honour the academic continent champions.
Okay News reports that Team Nigeria secured an extraordinary haul of honors, including two ultimate Grand Prizes across the Network and Innovation tracks, two First Prizes in Cloud computing, and a Second Prize in the Computing track. The historic sweep made Nigeria the most successful competing nation outside of China for the third consecutive year. The brilliant contingent comprised students selected from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) alongside peer innovators from other institutions including UNILAG, FUTMINNA, UNIPORT, NSU, and IUO.
A major focal point of the minister’s reception was the breakthrough project by the Innovation Team from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU). The scholars integrated Huawei’s proprietary AI and Ascend cloud architecture to invent a completely standalone, solar-powered medical diagnostic device capable of scanning and detecting malaria and acute intestinal parasites in less than three minutes without requiring internet connectivity. Commending their structural problem-solving approach, Dr. Tijani emphasized that his ministry is already mobilizing local tech investors and international ecosystem exposure to transition the students’ prototypes into commercial ventures capable of resolving systemic healthcare deficits across Africa.
