ATHENS, Greece — Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was involved in an altercation in the stands during Sunday’s EuroLeague basketball final in Athens, according to footage circulating on social media and reports from local media outlets.
Okay News reports that videos shared online showed the 58-year-old Greek businessman in a torn white shirt gesturing angrily across barriers inside the Telekom Center Athens. Another clip appeared to show several individuals attempting to separate Marinakis from another group during the confrontation.
The exact cause of the incident was not immediately clear. However, Greek outlet Kathimerini reported that the disagreement allegedly involved Grigoris Dimitriadis, a former adviser to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the premier’s nephew.
A spokesperson for Marinakis declined to comment on the development.
Marinakis, who also owns Greek basketball and football powerhouse Olympiacos, had attended the final to watch Olympiacos defeat Real Madrid 92-85 to secure the club’s first EuroLeague title in 13 years.
The incident came on the same day Nottingham Forest concluded their Premier League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth, sealing a 16th-place finish in the English top flight.
Forest avoided relegation under head coach Vitor Pereira, who became the club’s fourth permanent manager of the season after taking charge during the campaign. Reports indicate the club is preparing to offer Pereira a new long-term contract following the successful survival push.
