Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria – Ogun State Government authorities discharged all patients hospitalized for chemical inhalation across Ijebu-Ode on Sunday, May 17, 2026, confirming their full medical recovery.
Okay News reports that Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, confirmed the discharge of adults and children from the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode and facilities in Ijebu-Ife.
Coker identified the chemical as methane and announced the deployment of ambulance crews staffed with a driver and a paramedic to all municipal wards. “There were persons admitted at the Ijebu-Ode State Hospital and others at Ijebu-Ife who were affected by the methane emission,” Coker said. “Altogether, we had adults and children admitted, and I am glad to say that all have been discharged. They are hale and hearty.”
The state established a protocol to transfer patients requiring advanced care to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital. Coker said the ministry informed the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and will conduct toxicology tests on affected children to measure gas exposure levels.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, stated that the government installed gas analyzers around affected schools to monitor air quality over the past four weeks. “We are also collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Environment and research institutions to solve this challenge,” Oresanya said.
Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu, instructed school principals and teachers to manage student populations and warned against spreading false information.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, stated that the School Protection Squad, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, and specialized departments are securing the schools and surrounding communities. Ojajuni added that law enforcement is operating drones to survey the environment.
