Nigerian Military Explains Why ISIS Leader Al-Minuki ‘Killed in 2024’ Was Reportedly Killed Again

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has stepped forward to clear mounting public confusion regarding the identity of Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, the high-profile terrorist commander neutralized in a joint operation with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).

Okay News reports that the military’s clarification on Saturday, May 16, 2026, follows intense public skepticism after archival media reports surfaced showing that a terrorist leader bearing the exact same name was reportedly eliminated by security forces back in 2024.

In a formal press briefing in Abuja, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, explained that identical nomenclature is a calculated strategy employed across the Lake Chad Basin by insurgents to evade tracking. “It is important to state that within the North East region and across the Lake Chad Basin, the use of similar or identical names, aliases and nom de guerres is common among ISWAP and Boko Haram terrorists,” Major General Uba stated. “This is essentially part of their indoctrination program which is aimed at deliberately obscuring identities.”

The DHQ maintained that the operative killed on May 16, 2026, has been undeniably verified through multi-layered human intelligence (HUMINT) and advanced technical surveillance. Rather than a localized insurgent, this Al-Minuki was positively identified as a major global coordinator within the broader Islamic State network, responsible for directing international operations, media strategies, and funding pipelines across the Sahel. The military further revealed that the slain commander was directly linked to the infamous 2018 abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls in Yobe State and had recently been elevated to lead the group’s “General Directorate of States.”

Hailing the joint operation as a massive milestone in regional stability, the Defence Headquarters reiterated that there is “no ambiguity” regarding the target’s demise this time. Major General Uba urged the media and the general public to disregard historical coincidences and rely strictly on verified, official military channels to prevent falling prey to the deliberate misinformation loops orchestrated by remnants of the terrorist network.
