ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Peoples Democratic Party has escalated its internal leadership crisis to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, insisting that the judiciary will have the final say in the ongoing dispute over control of the party.
In a press statement on Monday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, the party said it had already filed an appeal alongside other applications seeking a definitive interpretation of issues surrounding its leadership, particularly the question of what constitutes internal party affairs. The PDP expressed confidence that the apex court would act swiftly in the interest of democracy.
Okay News reports that the party also challenged a recent gathering it described as a “so-called convention,” alleging it was organised by sympathisers of the ruling All Progressives Congress and loyalists of Nyesom Wike. According to the statement, the event was held despite pending legal proceedings and in disregard of ongoing matters before the Court of Appeal Nigeria.
The PDP further revealed that a ruling by the Federal High Court Abuja had granted access to its national secretariat to a rival faction. In response, the party said it has instructed its legal team to immediately challenge the judgment through an appeal and other legal processes.
Describing the situation as a critical moment for opposition politics in Nigeria, the PDP accused the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of attempting to weaken alternative political platforms. It, however, urged its members and Nigerians to remain hopeful, expressing confidence that the Supreme Court would uphold constitutional democracy and clarify the legal issues at stake.
