PSG Retain Champions League Title After Penalty Shootout Win Over Arsenal

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League crown after defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in the 2026 final at the Puskás Aréna on Saturday.

The match ended 1-1 after extra time in a closely contested encounter. Arsenal took an early lead through Kai Havertz in the sixth minute after capitalising on a loose ball inside the penalty area and firing a powerful finish beyond the goalkeeper.

PSG responded in the second half when Ousmane Dembélé converted a penalty in the 65th minute. The spot kick was awarded after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was brought down by Cristhian Mosquera inside the box.

Okay News reports that neither side could find a winning goal during the additional 30 minutes of extra time, sending the final into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Gonçalo Ramos, Désiré Doué, Achraf Hakimi and Lucas Beraldo converted their penalties for PSG, while Nuno Mendes saw his effort saved. For Arsenal, Viktor Gyökeres, Declan Rice and Gabriel Martinelli found the net, but Eberechi Eze missed wide and Gabriel Magalhães fired over the bar.

The result secured PSG’s second consecutive Champions League title under manager Luis Enrique, making the French club only the second team in the modern Champions League era to successfully defend the trophy.

For Arsenal, the defeat marked a painful end to their first Champions League final appearance in two decades, with Mikel Arteta’s side falling just short of claiming the club’s maiden European crown despite an impressive campaign.
