Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has authorized the release of 55 inmates from correctional facilities across the state as part of ongoing justice sector reforms aimed at decongesting prisons.

The announcement was made on Friday by Pedro Lawal, the state’s attorney-general and commissioner for justice, who noted that the release follows recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

According to Lawal, the governor’s directive involves the immediate release of 40 inmates, while the remaining individuals will be freed after serving additional terms ranging from three to six months.

The decision was made in exercise of Sanwo-Olu’s constitutional powers under Section 212 (1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“This decision aligns with Mr. Governor’s commitment to decongest correctional facilities in Lagos State as part of the Justice Sector Reforms in the state,” Lawal stated.

He explained that the Advisory Council carefully reviewed each case, considering factors such as the nature of the offense, duration of incarceration, age, health conditions, and the conduct of the inmate during their time in custody.

The council’s recommendations were based on thorough assessments and information provided by correctional facility authorities.

“The order is to be complied with after completion of the release administrative process by the correctional facilities,” Lawal added.
