By Muhammad A. Aliyu

Nigerian activist and politician Omoyele Sowore was briefly detained by Nigerian Immigration officials upon his arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday, Okay.ng reports.

Sowore, who was returning from the United States, was held by immigration officers who also confiscated his international passport. The reasons for his detention were not immediately clear.

Confirming the incident on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Sowore wrote:

“I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport released back to me.”

The activist did not provide further details about the cause of the detention but indicated that his passport was returned, and he was free to continue his activities.

Sowore is a well-known figure in Nigeria, recognized for his activism and previous presidential candidacy.

He has had prior encounters with security agencies; in 2019, he was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) on charges related to treasonable felony after organizing nationwide protests.

As of the time of this report, neither the Nigerian Immigration Service nor the DSS has issued an official statement regarding the incident.
