Spotify Unveils 2024 Wrapped: A Detailed Look at Nigeria’s Listening Habits

Spotify has released its much-anticipated 2024 Wrapped, offering a detailed look at the music and podcasts that defined Nigeria’s listening habits this year.

The highlights include the dominance of homegrown talent, a surge in local music consumption, and the rise of diverse podcast categories.

Homegrown Talent Reigns Supreme

For the fourth consecutive year, Nigerian artists have topped the list of most-streamed performers, underscoring the country’s unwavering support for its vibrant music scene. Asake emerged as the most-streamed artist in Sub-Saharan Africa, captivating audiences in Nigeria, Gambia, and Benin. His appeal spanned generations, resonating with listeners aged 13 to 55+.

Rising stars Ayo Maff and Muyeez made a mark with their hit tracks, “Dealer” and “Instagram,” while Young Jonn showcased his staying power with chart-toppers like “Aquafina” and “Stronger.” Burna Boy also secured a spot with his track “Higher,” solidifying his legacy as a global icon.

Spotify’s Phiona Okumu, Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, praised the seamless blend of generations and genres in Nigerian music, saying, “Our artists are not just shaping culture at home but also making waves internationally.”

Album and Artist Highlights

  • Young Jonn’s Jiggy Forever leads the most-streamed album list, followed by Asake’s Lungu Boy and Odumodu’s Eziokwu.
  • Burna Boy remains Nigeria’s most-exported artist and the sole Nigerian in the UK’s Top 100.
  • Rising star Ayra Starr broke records as the most-streamed Nigerian female artist in Latin America and Europe, holding the record for the longest time on Spotify’s global chart.

Podcast Boom

Nigerians also delved into a diverse podcast scene, with Apostle Femi Lazarus topping the most-streamed list. Motivational and spiritual podcasts like The Honest Bunch Podcast and Apostle Joshua Selman’s teachings ranked high, reflecting the audience’s broad interests.

  • Top cities driving the music scene: Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja.
