MONTERREY, Mexico — Sweden made a commanding start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on Sunday, cruising to a 5-1 victory over Tunisia in a Group F clash played in Guadalupe, near Monterrey.
Yasin Ayari opened the scoring with a long-range strike in the seventh minute before Alexander Isak doubled Sweden’s advantage midway through the first half. Tunisia briefly reduced the deficit through Omar Rekik before the break, but the North Africans were unable to build on the momentum.
Okay News reports that Viktor Gyokeres restored Sweden’s two-goal cushion after capitalising on a defensive error, while substitute Mattias Svanberg added a fourth late in the game. Ayari then completed his brace with another spectacular effort from outside the penalty area to seal an emphatic victory.
The result handed Sweden an early lead in Group F and marked a strong start for coach Graham Potter’s side as they seek to make a deep run at the tournament after missing the 2022 World Cup.
For Tunisia, the defeat represented a disappointing end to a defensive record that saw them concede no goals during qualification. The North African side now faces an uphill task in their bid to reach the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup history.
