WASHINGTON, United States, May 2026 — United States President Donald Trump has announced what he described as the completion of a deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran, saying he has authorised the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and ordered the removal of a United States naval blockade in the region.
Trump disclosed the development in a post on X on Sunday, describing the agreement as a breakthrough and signalling the resumption of unrestricted maritime traffic through one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
Okay News reports that the US president did not immediately provide details of the agreement or explain the circumstances that led to the reported decision.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” Trump wrote.
“Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, serves as a critical maritime route linking oil-producing nations in the Persian Gulf to international markets.
A significant portion of the world’s crude oil exports passes through the narrow waterway, making developments in the region closely watched by governments, energy markets, and shipping operators.
Any disruption to shipping through the Strait has historically triggered concerns over global oil supplies, freight costs, and energy prices.
