ABUJA, Nigeria – The Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria, Kayode Egbetokun, has resigned from his position following instructions from President Bola Tinubu. Okay News reports that a reliable source at the Presidency confirmed the development on Tuesday, 24 February 2026.
According to the source, Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, 23 February 2026. He is expected to be replaced by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu, who currently oversees the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub.
Egbetokun was appointed by President Tinubu as the 22nd indigenous Inspector General of Police on Monday, 19 June 2023, with the appointment later confirmed by the Police Service Commission on Tuesday, 31 October 2023. At the time of his appointment, Egbetokun was 58 years old and initially scheduled to retire on Wednesday, 4 September 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60.
However, recent amendments to Nigeria’s Police Act allowed the IGP to serve a full four-year term unless removed by the president. Under this provision, Egbetokun was expected to remain in office until Tuesday, 31 October 2027. The early resignation marks a significant leadership change at the helm of Nigeria’s police force, affecting security operations across the country.
The transition to Tunji Disu, a senior officer with extensive experience in law enforcement and criminal investigations, is expected to ensure continuity within the Nigeria Police Force and maintain stability during the leadership change.
