A two-storey building under construction collapsed late Tuesday night in the Ikota area of Lekki, Lagos State, leaving two people dead and several others injured.

Emergency responders at the scene have confirmed the recovery of two bodies, while at least five injured individuals have been rescued and rushed to the hospital. Rescue efforts are ongoing as more victims are feared to be trapped beneath the rubble.

Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), revealed that the cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.

“The LTO received a distress call after a collapsed building at the above address situated at Ikota, Ajah axis of Lagos State,” Farinloye stated.

“On arrival at the incident scene, it was discovered that a two-storey building under construction was found to have collapsed.

“The immediate cause of the incident is unknown and further investigation will be conducted. So far, the bodies of an adult male and a young boy were recovered, and five adult males with serious injuries have been rescued and taken to the hospital.

“Information indicates that more people are likely to still be under the rubble,” he added.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has deployed its heavy-duty equipment to aid in the search-and-rescue operations.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, spokesperson for LASEMA, assured that efforts were being intensified to rescue all trapped victims.

“The agency, alongside other common stakeholders, was able to rescue the victims while the agency’s heavy-duty equipment has been dispatched,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
