LOS ANGELES, United States — Veteran American character actor James Handy, widely recognized for his decades of supporting roles in blockbuster films like Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick, has been killed in a brutal stabbing outside his California home.
The 81-year-old actor was discovered unconscious early Wednesday morning, June 3, 2026, in the front yard of his residence in the suburban Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, suffering from multiple severe stab wounds to his chest.
Okay News reports that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrested 44-year-old Michael Gledhill at the scene on suspicion of murder. Gledhill is identified as the son of Handy’s longtime romantic partner and resided at the suburban Erwin Street property with his mother and the actor.
According to homicide detectives, the incident unfolded with a chilling and bizarre emergency call placed to emergency dispatchers at approximately 9:30 a.m. The 911 caller reportedly proclaimed to operators: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” When first responders converged on the cordoned-off block, Gledhill voluntarily flagged down the arriving patrol vehicles, admitting to officers that he was the suspect they were seeking.
Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department rushed Handy to a nearby regional trauma center, where he was tragically pronounced dead on arrival. Following his formal arrest, Gledhill was processed at the Van Nuys Jail and booked on one count of murder, with his bail set at $2 million. Investigators are treating the case as an isolated domestic incident and noted that a clear motive has not yet been established.
Handy’s prolific career in Hollywood spanned over 50 years, yielding nearly 150 television and film credits. Famed for his commanding screen presence, he frequently portrayed law enforcement figures, military officers, and authoritative officials, appearing in acclaimed TV dramas such as NYPD Blue, The West Wing, The X-Files, Alias, and Castle. His notable film contributions included roles in The Verdict, Arachnophobia, The Rocketeer, and the 1995 classic Jumanji, where he played an eccentric exterminator. His final major cinematic appearance came in the 2022 smash hit Top Gun: Maverick, portraying Jimmy, an old-school bartender working alongside Jennifer Connelly’s character.
