MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the appointment of Prof. Bukar Muhammad Usman as the pioneer Executive Chairman of the newly established Zakkat and Waqf Collection and Distribution Commission.
Okay News reports that the Commission was established in 2025 to oversee the institutionalized collection and equitable administration of Islamic alms (Zakkat) and endowments (Waqf) across the state. The move is part of the state’s broader strategy to enhance social welfare and religious administration through formal legislation.
Prof. Bukar Usman is a distinguished Islamic scholar and a Professor of Arabic Literature at Yobe State University. He brings extensive academic and administrative experience to the role, having previously served as the Head of the Department of Arabic and as a member of the Yobe State University Senate and Council.
In a related administrative update, Governor Zulum also appointed Malam Muhammad Ibrahim Muhammad as a member of the Borno State Senior Secondary Education Board. Malam Muhammad, a lecturer at the College of Education, Gashua, will represent Southern Borno, filling the vacancy left by the late Alhaji Ibrahim Sarki.
Both appointments carry an initial four-year term and are pending confirmation by the Borno State House of Assembly. Governor Zulum urged the new appointees to utilize their integrity and professional experience to strengthen their respective institutions and serve the people of Borno State effectively.
