3,000 Birds Affected as Bird Flu Hits Plateau, Katsina

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

Health authorities in Plateau and Katsina States have confirmed outbreaks of bird flu (Avian Influenza), sparking concerns among poultry farmers and public health officials.

In Plateau State, the outbreak was first reported on January 23, 2025, in the Farin Gada area of Jos North Local Government, according to Dr. Shase’et Sipak Dawat, Director of Animal Health. The disease affected over 3,000 birds on a poultry farm, prompting immediate intervention by state officials.

Dr. Dawat raised concerns that some of the infected birds had already been sold before the outbreak was detected.

“Poultry farmers are advised to remain vigilant and maintain strict hygiene to protect their birds,” he stated.

In Katsina State, the outbreak was detected two days earlier, on January 21, 2025, in Malumfashi Local Government Area.

Dr. Yau Ishaku, an animal health officer in the region, confirmed the development, stressing the need for farmers to adopt stringent biosecurity measures.

“It is essential for farmers to restrict access to their farms and maintain proper sanitation to prevent further infections,” he said.

Dr. Ishaku urged poultry farmers in Malumfashi, Kafur, and Kankara Local Government Areas to report any unusual poultry deaths immediately.

The Federal Government had earlier issued a nationwide alert about an outbreak in Kano State, warning farmers and veterinary offices to implement preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease.
