Former Chelsea player Andriy Shevchenko has been appointed the new Ukraine head coach.

It is the 39-year-old’s first steps into full senior management and his first match as head coach will be at home to Iceland in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on September 5.

Shevchenko joined the Ukraine coaching staff ahead of Euro 2016, succeeding Olexandr Zavarov as assistant to head coach Mykhaylo Fomenko.

But following a dismal showing in France, Fomenko resigned from his post and has now been replaced by his assistant.

Ukraine crashed out at the group stage of Euro 2016, losing all three of their matches against Germany, Poland and Northern Ireland.

Shevchenko, who won the 2004 Ballon d’Or, scored 48 goals in 111 international appearances, representing his country at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and at Euro 2012, co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland.

He won the Champions League with AC Milan and FA Cup with Chelsea and previously turned down a chance to become Ukraine’s head coach in 2012.
