Opposition leader Raila Odinga has withdrawn of October’s election re-run in Kenya, saying he wants to give his country’s electoral body time to carry out electoral reform.

The electoral commission had declared incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of the August 8 election.

But after finding irregularities in the election, the country’s Supreme Court annulled the result of the election, calling for a re-run.

“After deliberating on our position in respect of the upcoming election, considering the interests of the people of Kenya, the region and the world at large, we believe that all will be best served by the party vacating its presidential candidature in the election scheduled for 26 October 2017,” Odinga said.

The re-run was scheduled to take place on 26 October.
