In his eleventh-hour strategy to win the presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan has resolved to use his kinsmen to appeal to the conscience of influential Nigerians, especially those of northern extraction, to reconsider him for re-election, a reliable source has disclosed.

The source, who pleaded anonymity, listed some of his strategies to include a proxy visit to the Sultan, emirs, many first-class chiefs and religious leaders, including Imams and pastors from the North.

LEADERSHIP reliably gathered that

a respected monarch and a kinsman of the president, alongside Sokoto State deputy governor, Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, secretly visited the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubkar III, in his palace on the matter.Jonathan’s kinsman, who arrived Sokoto with a presidential jet, headed straight for the Sultan’s palace where they held a closed-door meeting.

Details of the meeting could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report. However, a source within the palace said it was not unconnected with the president’s re-election bid.

Deputy Governor Shagari is the coordinator of Jonathan’s campaign in the state.
