The Super Falcons of Nigeria have secured their spot in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dominant performance against Cape Verde in the final round of qualifiers.

The eleven-time African champions secured a 7-1 aggregate victory over their opponents.

Led by coach Justine Madugu, the Super Falcons had already set the stage for their qualification with a resounding 5-0 victory over Cape Verde in the first leg held in Abuja on Friday.

The team sealed their place in the continental competition with a 2-1 win in the second leg at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde in Praia on Tuesday.

Cape Verde took an early lead in the second leg, with Ivania Moreira finding the net in the eighth minute. Despite numerous chances, the Falcons struggled to equalize until Esther Okoronkwo scored a solo effort in the 60th minute.

The comeback was completed in stoppage time when Rasheedat Ajibade secured the victory.

The win maintains Nigeria’s impeccable record of participating in every edition of the WAFCON since its inception in 1991.

The Super Falcons will join other top teams, including South Africa, Ghana, Botswana, Morocco, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia, Senegal, Zambia, Tanzania, and Mali, in the 15th edition of Africa’s premier women’s football competition.
