Renowned Nollywood actress Mary Njoku has sparked a conversation about the societal perception of marriage, asserting that it should not be viewed as an achievement, but rather finding the right partner should be celebrated.

In a candid post shared on her Instagram account, the actress addressed the prevailing pressure placed on women to marry, highlighting the importance of allowing individuals the freedom to make significant life decisions without undue influence.

“Dear married women, Enough! Marriage is not an achievement. Finding the RIGHT partner is,” Njoku wrote in her post.

She went on to urge women to refrain from pressuring others into marriage, emphasizing that many married individuals may not be genuinely happy in their unions but conform to societal expectations.

“Give the singles space to make the biggest decisions of their lives and find GOOD partners in peace. Over 60% of couples claim happiness often because of societal expectations,” she continued.

Njoku illustrated her point with a fictional scenario, referencing a woman named Ifeoma who was coerced into a marriage that brought her unhappiness and turmoil.

“That was how Ifeoma was pushed to marry nonsense. Every weekend na hospital appointment for black eye, and spiritual warfare against physical side chicks,” she lamented.

The actress concluded her post with a call for understanding and empathy, urging individuals to focus on more pressing matters and allow singles the freedom to navigate their paths without judgment.

“Rest Biko. Focus on the Economy! And Let the singles BREATHE,” she added.
