Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year sentence for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, was hospitalized on Monday following an attack by another inmate at a California prison.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was assaulted around 7:20 a.m. inside a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, located about 70 miles north of Los Angeles.

“At approximately 7:20am today, Daystar Peterson was attacked by another inmate at a housing unit in the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi,” CDCR said in a statement. “Staff immediately responded, activated 911 and began medical aid. Peterson was subsequently transported to an outside medical facility for further treatment.”

Though the severity of Lanez’s injuries was not officially disclosed, entertainment outlet TMZ reported that the rapper had been stabbed and was expected to survive the attack.

Okay.ng reports that prison authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, in collaboration with the Kern County district attorney’s office.

Lanez, 31, was convicted in 2023 after a highly publicized trial in Los Angeles. During the trial, prosecutors detailed how he had ordered Megan Thee Stallion, real name Megan Pete, to “dance” before firing several shots at her feet, causing injuries that affected her ability to walk.

The shooting occurred after a night out at Kylie Jenner’s home in July 2020. Megan, Lanez, his bodyguard, and her friend Kelsey Harris had been in a car when an argument broke out. Harris, who revealed she had feelings for Lanez, had only learned of Megan and Lanez’s relationship that night.

The dispute escalated, leading Megan to demand she be let out of the vehicle, shortly after which the shooting happened.

Following the trial, Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison. His conviction included charges of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
